(UCAN) -- A Church effort to forge unity among tribals in eastern India during the recent
elections brought mixed results, according to Church spokespersons. [...]
Bishop Victor Kindo of Raigarh in Madhya Pradesh said that
"all of us worked together politically" for the first time, adding that he had
not seen such cooperation among his people in the 12 years of his episcopate.

Christians in the diocese 1,635 kilometers southeast of New
Delhi had not previously elected one of their own even to the state legislature, said
Bishop Kindo, 50, who faced BJP criticism for mixing religion and politics.

Tribal priest Father Lalit Tigga said that pro-Hindu groups
do not want his people to become educated and that they resent Christian missioners, who
have worked for tribals' social and economic advance for a century.

The diocesan Catholic Sabha (CS, laity council) therefore
decided to shift its traditional allegiance from a tribal-oriented party to the Congress
party, said its president, Benjamin Minj.
