VARANASI, India (UCAN) -- India's Catholic bishops have
resolved to stamp out casteism in the Church and to work to end poverty in the country to
help celebrate the Jubilee of the Year 2000.

Underscoring the meeting in the Hindu city, the bishops
stressed fostering a community that can discern the Spirit's presence in other religions.
Responding to challenges that the Church
implement its own teachings on justice, equality and peace, the bishops said they would
increasingly admit and employ dalits and tribals in Church institutions.

discrimination in the Church. Bishop George Punnakottil of Kothamangalam, who presented a
paper on the problem, blamed the social evil for many desertions from the Catholic Church.
